MOUNT DESERT ISLAND HERITAGE |
There are a lot of things that make Mount Desert Island special, but one of the most important is its rich and varied heritage. In many ways, Mount Desert Island is America in microcosm. From early explorers, farmers, and seafaring families; from wealthy industrialists, accomplished artists and musicians; to today's lobstermen and women, skilled boat builders, scientists conducting cutting edge biomedical research, and prominent summer residents from all walks of life; Mount Desert Island is and always has been a unique melting pot where many of the "old ways" are still practiced on a daily basis, and where people still know each other as people regardless of their background or social position. It is our hope that all residents of the island - both year-round and seasonal - will take the time and make the effort to understand this wonderful heritage and to nurture its continuation, because that is what keeps our villages alive and vibrant, not impersonal and sterile like so many other communities around the country today. Over the next few weeks and months we plan to activate the following links to pages that will
detail some general historical information about MDI, and to pages that will tell some stories about what island life was like
