In case you didn't see it - or even if you did - here are two photos of the Super "Harvest" Moon last night in total eclipse!
It was quite a sight!
Lunar eclipse in totality - a "blood moon".

Summer's swan song as fall closes in!
A major celestial event will occur Sunday evening.
Wednesday, September 23, 2015
A last reminder of summer at Duck Pond.
Today marks the Autumnal Equinox and the first day of fall in the northern hemisphere.
It has been very dry, and water levels are low! Recent sunny days have been nice, but we need some rain!

Pretty Marsh Inner Harbor at high tide.

The cruise ship "Seabourn Quest" at anchor in Bar Harbor this morning
after a female passenger apparently fell overboard and drowned yesterday evening off Cape Ann, Massachusetts.
The ship was enroute to Bar Harbor from Boston on the beginning of a 10 day trip to Montreal.

September Sunset at Bartlett's Landing.
Wednesday, September 9, 2015
Early morning mist drifts over Hodgdon Pond.
What a beautiful Labor Day weekend we had - but that all appears to be changing as warm, moist air from the south brings fog, showers, and muggy
conditions for the next few days. We can't complain though,

(Full moon was Saturday night.)
Monday, August 31, 2015
A large chartered sailing yacht at anchor in Frenchman Bay off Bar Harbor this weekend.
It's the last day of August! Yikes! Where did the summer go? Island schools open tomorrow. Tourists with children are rapidly being replaced by retirees and cruise ship passengers. Labor Day is very late this year, but it is coming up this weekend, along with the Blue Hill Fair.
We are reminded of Judy Collins' beautiful 1968 folk song: "Who Knows Where the Time Goes".

A foggy evening last Sunday in Bar Harbor.
Humidity and high dew points in the mid-70's have combined to make the past few days quite oppressive around Mount Desert Island.
Together they have also produced fog in Bar Harbor and other ports on the south and east sides of the island as the warm air flow has been from
the southeast off the ocean. Relatively few island residents have air conditioners because they are rarely needed when hot days are usually
cooled by an afternoon sea breeze, but most of us would welcome an air conditioner right now! Hopefully the recent pattern will break by mid-week!

Bass Harbor on a beautiful August day yesterday!
In case you haven't noticed - there are lots of people here on the island right now! This week is probably the very peak of our very busy 2015
tourist season! Drive carefully - and be patient! Expect the unexpected - it probably will happen!
Wednesday, August 12, 2015
Early morning at Pond's End - before the crowds!
Monday, August 10, 2015
Bar Harbor's Shore Path yesterday evening.

Have Gun; Will Travel?
You see some unusual things in and around Bar Harbor during the summer months, and the above photo certainly qualifies for membership in that category!
This pickup truck, complete with a large replica (we hope) sixgun
mounted prominently in the bed, was spotted parked on the Bar Harbor town pier early yesterday morning! Is our society obsessed with guns,
or what? Go figure!

Dawn at Thompson Island earlier this week.

Bar Harbor Inn at sunset last weekend.

Who? Me? Eating your flowers? Nah - you know I wouldn't do that!
I was just smelling their sweet fragrance! I've been good!

The new "Blue" moon as it began a few days ago.
In case you haven't heard - the full moon tonight and tomorrow will be a "Blue Moon" - meaning that it will be the second full moon this month!
Lots of clouds and showers have been around our area lately, often obscuring interesting things happening in the heavens above. Hopefully,
tonight will prove to be an exception so you can see this relatively unusual and beautiful celestial event!

Unsettled weather continues with evening showers and fog.
Friday, July 24, 2015
Our recent unsettled weather is bringing dramatic sunsets.
Wednesday, July 22, 2015
A relatively rare Purple Fringed Orchis in full bloom along the Brown Mountain Carriage Road this morning.
These beautiful members of the orchid family are very fragile, and we are aware of only a few existing in Acadia.
Monday, July 20, 2015
Sunset off the Bar Harbor Town Pier late last week.

Making hay along the Crooked Road.

No, this is not a boating accident! The four-masted schooner "Margaret Todd" slowed traffic this afternoon in Hulls Cove as she sat high and dry on the gravel beach. One advantage of our 10-12 ft. tide range is that it provides local mariners an opportunity to intentionally ground their vessel at high tide and then do any required underwater maintenance during the following low tide! "Margaret Todd" was safely afloat again just a few hours later!

One frequently sees unusual watercraft of all kinds around harbors on Mount Desert Island during the summer months, but this one is quite unique! Our first thought was that it might be a type of floating "food truck" specializing in lobsters and other seafood. Our second thought was that it is a really cool "party boat"! Turns out that it is both and neither! It is a floating lobster dealer named Crabtree Lobster which buys from local lobstermen, sells both wholesale and retail, offers pick up and delivery, and has operated out of Blue Hill for the past 14 years. And yes, in a former life she was a party boat in Connecticut! We spotted her flying the "Jolly Lobster" at the Seal Cove launch ramp this morning!

A quiet harbor at the northern end of Somes Sound on a sunny, early July evening.
Monday, July 6, 2015
This Pirate float was one of many entries in Bar Harbor's Independence Day parade on Saturday.
The parade along with music, food, fireworks and beautiful weather brought huge crowds to the island!
Friday, July 3, 2015
The full "Strawberry" moon rising over Seawall.
Have a happy and safe Independence Day weekend!

Venus and Jupiter in conjunction yesterday evening.
If you looked to the western sky yesterday evening shortly after sunset, you probably saw something not seen by any person on Earth for the past 2,000 years! The planets Venus (brightest) and Jupiter (above Venus) were in VERY close conjunction! Fortunately, the predicted cloud cover did not materialize early, so this dramatic and unusual celestial event was visible here for about one hour from 9 to 10 p.m. EDT. We hope you saw it, because the photo doesn't do it justice!
Jupiter is actually much larger than Venus, but it looks smaller in this photo from Earth
