Their haunting calls echoed over the still water for more than an hour.

An active Bald Eagle nest on Black Island in Blue Hill Bay on Saturday.
Note the head of a young eaglet partially visible just above the edge of the nest!
Bald Eagles have made a remarkable comeback here in recent years, and now they are spotted regularly all around the Mount Desert area including Blue Hill and Frenchman Bays. This eaglet above may seem relatively small today, but it will grow rapidly, eventually becoming large enough to force its adult parents out of the nest until their big baby fledges!
Our weather over the past weekend was about as perfect as it ever could get! We hope you were out enjoying it, and that any doubts you might have
had about summer were firmly put to rest!

Unsettled weather earlier this week brought a couple of widely scattered showers and some pretty cloud formations to the island each day - mostly in the
afternoon. That all seems to have cleared out now, and today has been wall-to-wall sunshine with warm, summer-like temperatures. The forecast for this
weekend is more of the same. If that holds, and we think it will, this upcoming weekend should be the best so far in 2016! Get out and take advantage of the sun and long days -
on the water if you can, because the wind is expected to be light out of the southwest!

A beautiful early morning on an island farm! Gettin' up early is easy to do in June!
We have just passed the Summer Solstice, so today will be the longest day of the year, and our much anticipated Summer has officially begun. After a slight
chance of showers this afternoon, the weather forecast is predicting sunny mild days and clear nights right through the upcoming weekend! Get out as
often as you can to enjoy this spectacular time of the year here on the gorgeous Maine coast! You need to be intentional about it, because summer days
always fly by too fast, and you don't want to be left wondering where they went!

Many wildflowers are suddenly starting to bloom, and you can see them almost everywhere you look.
It usually happens like this each year! A slow, cool spring becomes full summer almost overnight!
Enjoy this beautiful season!

It's Lady's Slipper time - these beautiful but fragile wild orchids are now in bloom.
A NOTE OF CAUTION

MEMORIAL DAY 2016
Saturday, May 28, 2016
In case you haven't noticed, Somesville has a new sign as you enter the village from the north on Main Street (Route 102). Installed this week, the attractive new sign identifies Somesville as a National Historic District and the first village on Mount Desert Island! Check it out!
Hard as it is to believe, Memorial Day weekend is upon us! The weather looks to be a mixed bag of sun, clouds and showers from time to time. Get
out and enjoy the so-called "first weekend of summer", because the days pass by very quickly this time of year!

This Star Flower was spotted in bloom early today along a Carriage Road near Parkman Mountain.

NASA photo of today's transit of Mercury across the face of the sun - time was about 10 a.m. EDT.
See entry below from earlier this morning.
Monday, May 9, 2016
Yesterday brought some much needed rain along with very cool temperatures as the wind was from the east
There will be a rare transit of the planet Mercury across the face of the sun today, and the clouds should break allowing us to see most if not all
of it. Please do not look directly into the sun, as that could cause serious eye damage. For those of you in the Mount Desert area, Acadia National Park
Rangers will be in the Hulls Cove Visitor Center parking lot from 7 a.m. until 3 p.m. with telescopes using special solar filters. Another option would
be to look at it online on Slooh or similar live astronomy sites. This happens just once every several years, so
don't miss it!

View of Long Pond from the Fire Road yesterday morning.
The unpaved Fire Road is not yet open to vehicles, but it provides a nice walk in the woods in early spring!
Winter blow-downs should be cleared and gates open by June 1.
Monday, May 2, 2016
The Holland-America cruise ship "Veendam" dropped anchor in Bar Harbor on Friday!
That marked the first of more than 120 such cruise ship visits scheduled for Bar Harbor this season!
Thursday, April 28, 2016
Our temperatures have been running 10-20 degrees below normal recently,
but that doesn't seem to bother these hyacinths spotted in a garden near the head of Somes Sound!
Warmer weather should return by the weekend.
Monday, April 25, 2016
Red maples are in bloom, more proof that spring is here!
Thursday, April 21, 2016
A large patch of Trailing Arbutus in full bloom yesterday along the Brown Mountain Carriage Road!
It seemed surprisingly early to us - but then 2016 has not been a normal year for either the weather or politics!
Today's high temperature could hit 70 degrees F!

Ocean Drive on a sunny weekend in early spring.
The Loop Road in Acadia National Park opened Friday, and the weather cooperated with abundant sunshine both Saturday and Sunday. It is still
spring in Maine, however, and a few showers are in the forecast for early this week. Nevertheless, Acadia's Centennial Year is now officially underway with
large crowds expected all summer - so hold onto your hat and enjoy the party!

Seal Cove launch ramp waiting for "the season" to begin.

Northeast Harbor and the Asticou Inn last Thursday afternoon.
As is often the case around here, the weather seems to be main story on everyone's mind! The calendar and longer hours of daylight both say
spring is here - but rain, fog and cool temperatures have dominated our forecast for several weeks. And while we received very little snow this past winter,
there have been lots of significant wind storms recently causing frequent power outages and some property damage! All this is enough to at least give pause
to even the most ardent global warming disbeliever!
Thursday, April 7, 2016
Bar Harbor's Shore Path ahead of yet another rain and wind storm starting this afternoon.
Monday, April 4, 2016
Great Head as seen from Ocean Drive last week.
Friday, April 1, 2016
This little crocus popped through the bare soil yesterday. Also yesterday, the wood frogs and peepers began their beautiful spring chorus in fresh water marshes,
and the overnight temperature last night remained close to 60 degrees (F)! Despite some more predicted cold weather for next Monday and Tuesday, spring
is here -
