Pretty Marsh Inner Harbor.

The nor'easter that was widely forecast for last night arrived on schedule, but the highest winds were thankfully a bit lower here on MDI than originally predicted. Temperatures remained in the mid-30's F, so we received all rain and no snow!

Today is the last day of an eventful 2016. With some trepidation about what 2017 might hold, we wish you all a very

A quiet and cold, but snowless, late afternoon at Bartlett's Landing on Christmas Day.

Monday, December 19, 2016

In addition to Christmas, Hanukkah and Kwanzaa, all of which occur during the next week or 10 days. Wednesday morning at 5:55 a.m. EST will mark the Winter Solstice in the northern hemisphere. That will be the beginning of Winter and the shortest day of the year! The hours of daylight will gradually increase until June 21st.

Have a wonderful holiday season filled with peace, love and hope for the future!

So - how cold did it get last night here on Mount Desert Island at the immediate coast line - inquiring minds want to know?

And...ta dah...the answer is: 6 degrees F below zero with a sustained wind out of the northwest at about 25 knots and frequent gusts to 35 or 40 knots! That makes a wind chill of minus 30F to minus 40F! About all you can do in such conditions is stay in out of the wind and stoke up your wood stove or fireplace!

To borrow the title of an old Doc Watson song = "Life gets tejous, don't it?"

The full "Cold" Supermoon setting in the west about 6:15 a.m. this morning. That makes 3 just since October!
Lots of ice around as the snow melted quite a bit and temps remained near freezing!
Be very careful driving and/or walking!!

Saturday, December 10, 2016

View this morning of the waxing "Cold Moon" on its way to becoming a full Supermoon on December 14!
Outside temp here : +14 degrees F.
Outside temp on the moon / (sunny side): +200 degrees F. / (dark side): -200 degrees F.

Finally! Our first snow of the season!

It's not much, but it is about 1 1/2 inches of real snow nonetheless!
And it turned cold too - about 24F here on the coast this morning!

Tuesday, December 6, 2016

There is very little activity in Southwest Harbor at this time of the year!
This view is full of boats during the summer months!

Bar Harbor Village Green and Bandstand earlier this week.
Still no snow!

USCGC Northland (WMEC 904)

The U. S. Coast Guard medium endurance cutter "Northland" based in Portsmouth, Virginia visited Bar Harbor on Monday, anchoring well off the town pier. "Northland", 270 feet long, carries a crew of 13 officers and 85 enlisted personnel. She performs a variety of duties including Homeland Security and Law Enforcement.

Waiting for spring!

Saturday, November 26, 2016

A late November day at Seal Cove.

Well, Thanksgiving is now in the rear view mirror, and we still have no snow! There is plenty on the ground in the Berkshires of Western Mass. and in the mountains to our West - but nothing around here! The extended forecast for coastal Maine indicates clouds and showers over much of the coming week with continued above average temperatures!

Another dramatic Fall sunset in Pretty Marsh.

Our weather continues to make news! 2016 has been extremely dry with rainfall deficits of around 50-60%! We have received a bit of relief over the past two weeks, and it looks like more rain on the way for the next few days. Still, it is past the middle of November, and yesterday was sunny and mild with temperatures hitting 60 degrees! Amazing!

Shortly after sunset in Pretty Marsh on Monday evening.
Venus is visible in the upper left corner.

The full "Beaver" Supermoon setting this morning about 6 a.m. EST.

This is the closest our moon has been to the Earth since 1948!

View over calm Hodgdon Pond on Tuesday - a mild, but historic, Election Day!

Our country has been tested before, and is now being severely tested again. We must find a way to heal our divisions, respect our diversity, comfort our children, and guarantee everyone equal opportunity to grow and prosper. After having to endure such an extremely bitter, harsh, and crudely profane election campaign, this will be no easy task.

Tomorrow we remember the service and sacrifice of our many veterans who all too often were called to give their lives for our still fragile democracy. In large part because of them, this nation, despite its flaws, has continued to be a beacon of hope, freedom and equality for our own citizens and for the rest of the world.
We cannot let that light go out!

Monday, November 7, 2016

For the first time in many months, this area around Bar Harbor's Agamont Park is quiet! The cruise ships are gone, bus tours are gone, and tourists in general are virtually all gone! Ramps and floats are hauled out for protection against winter storms! Enjoy this time as the holiday season approaches - but never fear - May is just around the corner!

After two years of unpleasant, and some would argue destructive campaigning, tomorrow - finally - is Election Day!
It's both your privilege and your obligation! Our democracy is now in YOUR HANDS!

This attractive and unusual wooden ketch was spotted on a mooring in Northeast Harbor on Tuesday morning.

Wednesday, November 2, 2016

It's hard to believe that November is here already - but just in case you need a reminder, take a quick look at the harbors around the island! Almost all of the summer pleasure craft that have been so prevalent for the last six months are gone, having been replaced by working lobster boats and empty moorings! The photo above is of Northeast Harbor early yesterday morning.

This bog is inhabited by carniverous plants!
They are all around you!

Have a happy and safe Halloween!

Saturday, October 29, 2016

Our cruise ship season ends today. Oceania Cruise Line's "Regatta" made one of the
last visits to Bar Harbor on Thursday.

It certainly looks and feels more like winter now than it has for over six months! We are always amazed at how fast the weather changes once it gets started! Next up is the Holiday Season - Yikes! Where did summer go?

Wednesday, October 26, 2016

The full "Hunters Moon" preparing to set in the west one morning early last week.

The iconic Somesville Bridge last Saturday morning with clouds and a few showers around.

More beautiful leaves as this year's foliage season draws to a close.

Wednesday, October 19, 2016

Our autumn leaves were at their peak color early this week - about 10 days later than usual, but more dramatic than we have seen for many years! However, rain showers today and continuing on through the weekend should knock many of them down. It's hard to complain though, because we have been very dry!

Sunday, October 16, 2016

Here are photos of the lead runners in today's MDI Marathon as they passed through Somesville at about the 21 mile mark. Both went on to win the male and female overall titles.

Male leader and winner: Dan Vassallo, Peabody, MA 2:21

Female leader and winner: Leah Frost, Glover, VT 2:54

The full Hunters Supermoon setting behind a ridge of spruce trees about 5:45 this morning!
Sp-o-o-o-ky! But also cool!

Friday, October 14, 2016

The stone barn on the Crooked Road today around noon.
Our foliage is peaking here now, and is slightly past peak in some places! The leaves are exceptionally beautiful this year, so get out and look before they are gone! Don't forget that the MDI Marathon will be run this Sunday morning starting in Bar Harbor at 8 a.m. Take extra care driving, and give the right-of-way to runners!

Wednesday, October 12, 2016

Fall color continues to be beautiful around the Island, but it is nearing peak, so do your "leaf peeping" now!

Monday, October 10, 2016

Fall color on Somes Pond Saturday morning.

Wow! It's Columbus Day already and the summer season is officially over! Where does the time go?

Our fall foliage suddenly popped around the island over the past weekend, and there are some absolutely dramatic areas slong the Crooked Road, Eagle Lake Road, and in Pretty Marsh. We also received some much needed rain yesterday, but after the front passed by this morning temperatures began to drop and a strong north wind caused some local power outages! Two cruise ships anchored in Bar Harbor were unable to run their tenders to and from the Town Pier during several mid-day hours due to high, wind-blown seas!

Friday, October 7, 2016

This Hairy Woodpecker has been aggressively searching for a meal - even in homes and sheds!

The projected track for Hurricane Matthew has changed significantly over the past two days. It now appears that the massive storm will stay south of Cape Hatterass, possibly even looping back to strike Florida a second time!

Meanwhile, our unusually dry conditions continue here on the island. We need a soaking rain -
but can do without high winds!

Wednesday, October 5, 2016

The Kebo Valley Golf Club in Bar Harbor yesterday morning.

Matthew continues to be a major hurricane, and while the threat seems to be mainly south of the mid-Atlantic, there is still a chance it could be drawn far enough north to impact Mount Desert Island on Sunday or Monday. We'll still watch it! Maybe we could put in an order for some much needed rainfall with no wind!

Monday, October 3, 2016

A rocky shoreline in early fall.

Let's all keep an eye on the weather for next weekend. Hurricane Matthew is a long way away, but it's a big storm, and it's projected track could be ominous! We'll keep you posted!
